🎵 Guidelines for Submitting Your Sitar Video Clips 🎵

To make sure you get the most accurate and helpful feedback on your playing, please follow these simple setup guidelines before hitting record. Seeing your posture and hearing your music clearly makes all the difference!

🎥 Camera Setup & Framing

  • 👁️ Eye-Level Angle: Place your camera or phone at eye level. Avoid placing it on the floor, as looking down distorts the view of your hand positions and posture.

  • 👐 Both Hands in Full View: Both your left hand (fretwork) and right hand (mizrab striking) must be clearly visible throughout the entire clip.

  • 🧘 Full Sitting Posture: Frame the shot so your entire sitting posture is visible. Your leg placement and spine alignment are crucial for proper technique!

  • 🎸 End-to-End Sitar: The entire sitar—from the main tumba (resonator) all the way up to the kuntis (tuning pegs)—should be within the frame.

🎧 Audio & Environment

  • 🤫 Silence the Background: Please turn off fans, ACs, TVs, or anything else making background noise. Sitar acoustics are delicate, and we want to hear only your instrument.

  • 🦻 Check the Mix: If you are practicing with a electronic tanpura or tabla machine, make sure it isn't drowning out your sitar. Your instrument should be the main star of the audio.

💡 Extra Tips for a Great Recording

  • ☀️ Lighting Matters: Make sure the light source is in front of you (or to the side), not behind you. Sitting in front of a bright window turns you into a silhouette!

  • ⏱️ Keep it Focused: Try to keep your video clips focused on the specific line, taan, or gat you want reviewed so we can dive straight into the feedback.

Different Sitar Gharanas

All the Gharanas are mentioned except Etawah Gharana and Maihar Gharana - which are treated as the most prominent Sitar Gharanas today. There are several articles available on Internet on these two Gharanas and Maestros. Jaipur Sitar Gharana Bahadur Sen, son of legendary Masit Khan used to stay in Jaipur and continued to play Sitar. They used to use title ‘Sen’ after their names as they claimed themselves to be descendants of Miyan Taan Sen, i.e. member of Senia Gharana. Masit Khan’s nephew, Dulha Khan was n extraordinary Sitarist of his time. Rahim Sen,  son of Sukh Sen, the ‘mul-purush’ of Senia Gharana , married the daughter of Dulha Khan. Rahim Sen got talim from both, father Sukh Sen and father-in-law Dulha Khan. Rahim Sen and his brother Hussain Khan were very popular Sitarists of their time.
